What is pH, and why does it matter?

The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 based on how acidic or alkaline something is – anything below 7 is acidic, while a number above 7 is alkaline (or basic). A healthy external vaginal area, or vulva, has an acidic pH. The acidic nature is important to your body’s natural defense and maintaining a good environment for a healthy external vaginal area. That’s why it’s so important to use products formulated to complement the natural pH range of your external vaginal area.

Do I really need special products for my vulva?

Products formulated for your entire body can throw off the external vaginal pH balance and may cause discomfort or even irritation. All Vagisil® products are designed especially for vulvar use – pH balanced, safe and effective for sensitive intimate skin, and tested by gynecologists and dermatologists.

Are your products tested on animals?

None of the Vagisil® cosmetic products have been tested on animals.

What are the different types of intimate odor?

We all have our unique scent. It's natural. But there are factors that can create external odors that you may find unpleasant. The vulva has sweat glands just like the armpit, and sweat bacteria leads to odor. Bodily fluids including menstrual blood, urine, and semen also create external odor. Noticeable odor may be a sign of a pH imbalance. Internal vaginal infections such as BV produce a strong fishy odor which should be discussed with your doctor. If an odor is particularly strong or lasts for several days even with regular hygiene, speak with your doctor about it.

Is it OK to use intimate care products that contain fragrance?

Many gynecologists still do not recommend fragrance-containing products. They may be unaware of our new skin-friendly scents that are formulated with allergen-free scent ingredients and are gentle enough for intimate skin and all over. But we also offer fragrance-free products like our Healthy Detox and Unscented lines. All of our products are gynecologist-tested, so whether you enjoy a scent experience or prefer unscented products, there's a Vagisil® product that's just right for you.

Why should I use an intimate wash?

We all use many products specially formulated for a specific area of the body -- toothpaste to clean teeth, shampoo to clean hair. Vagisil® washes are no exception. They are designed especially for vulvar use – pH balanced to vulvar skin, safe and effective for sensitive intimate skin, and tested by gynecologists and dermatologists.

What is the difference between Vagisil® washes and typical cleansers?

Vagisil® washes are specially formulated for the vulva and are pH balanced to intimate skin. Soaps have a pH much higher than intimate skin, and even typical washes and cleansing bars are typically formulated at a pH higher than the intimate area.

Isn't the vagina a self-cleaning oven?

While the vagina (internal) is self-cleaning, the vulva (the external vaginal area) is not. Gentle cleansing of the vulva with a pH-balanced wash like Vagisil® is important for removing common materials like vaginal discharge, urine, and feces that can accumulate and cause odor and irritation. These materials are not readily removed with water alone, and vulvar skin benefits from gentle cleansing with a pH-balanced wash.

Why do I have vaginal itching?

All sorts of things can cause itch. Everyday things like detergents, pads and liners, pubic area hair removal, friction, sweat, tight clothing, and hormonal changes can cause itching. Intense itching is often a symptom of a yeast infection or other common vulvovaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) or Trichomoniasis. If you think an infection may be causing itching, speak with your healthcare professional for proper treatment of the underlying infection. Vagisil® cremes and wipes can help stop the itching instantly, so you feel relief as you get treatment for the infection.

Will Vagisil® Anti-Itch Cremes cure a yeast infection?

No, Vagisil® Anti-Itch Cremes will not cure yeast infections. They are designed to instantly relieve the external burning and itching that is associated with a yeast infection. For yeast infection treatment, try Vagistat® 1, Vagistat® 3 or Vagistat® 7.

Is it safe to use Vagisil® Anti-Itch Creme while pregnant?

If you believe you are pregnant or are breast-feeding we recommend that you consult your doctor before using any medicated product.

Are Vagisil® wipes flushable?

No. Please do not flush wipes. Please follow disposal directions on package.

When should I use a Dry Wash® spray?

You can use Vagisil® Dry Wash® Sprays whenever you need a little boost of freshness. Say you squeezed in a yoga class at lunch, or have a date right after work, or sweat through your commute... They’re great in between showers and on-the-go.
